Study Centre accessibility
The Study Centre is located at the west side of the Marshall Court courtyard and is accessed through the West Court entrance on Park Street or internally via the West Court entrance from the Orchard. The majority of the building does not have step free access, except for the ground floor.
Location
The Study Centre is located at the west side of the Marshall Court courtyard and is accessed internally via West Court and externally at the far end of Marshall Court via the West Court entrance on Park Street. See the West Court reception accessibility guide for information about the internal entrance.
Entrance access
The entrance from Marshall Court provides access to the ground floor and is clearly signed with 'STUDY CENTRE'. There is ramped access which is permanent, steep and 87cm wide without handrails. There is no canopy or recess for weather protection. The entrance door contrasts visually with the surroundings and require a key card for access, with the reader positioned at a height of 111cm. The door opens towards you (pull), is single width, heavy, and has an opening width of 82cm. There is a small threshold lip of 2cm or below.
Inside the building
A hearing assistance system is available for the rooms on request, but there is no visual fire alarm beacon. There is no lift to the first or second floors. Teaching Rooms 2-10 are on floors that are not accessible.
Room 1: This room is on the ground floor and has step free access. Signage for the room is clearly visible on or near the door. The corridor outside the rooms is sufficiently wide (150cm+) to allow wheelchair users to pass. The door opening width is 75cm+ and the door is not push pad activated. There is no fixed furniture. The clear floor space beneath tables is 71cm. The chairs do not have armrests on both sides. While the room does not have an unobstructed minimum turning space of 150cm x 150cm, furniture can be moved to create a turning space for wheelchair users. The floor coverings are even with no trip hazards.
Stairs: The stairs are located to the left as you enter, opposite the accessible toilet, and are approximately 9 meters from the Study Centre entrance. Manual, heavy, single doors provide access to the stairwell on the second floor. The stairs serve the ground, first, and second floors, with more than 15 steps between each floor. The height of the steps is between the recommended 15cm and 18cm, but their depth does not meet the recommended 30cm to 45cm. The steps are not clearly marked. Handrails are present but not at the recommended height of 90cm to 100cm. They cover the full length of the stairs and are easy to grip but do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last steps. The lighting levels at the steps are good.
There are several rooms on the first and second floor, none with step free access. Below are example descriptions of two rooms.
Room 6: This room is on the first floor. Signage for the room is clearly visible on or near the door. As well as the stairs to access the first floor, there are two deep (18cm+) steps required for access to this room. These steps are not clearly marked and do not have handrails. The door opening widths are under 75cm, and the doors are not push pad activated. There is no fixed furniture in the room. The clear floor space beneath tables is 69cm. There are no chairs with armrests on both sides. The floor coverings are even with no trip hazards.
Room 8: This room is on the second floor, accessed via the stairs. The door opening width is 75cm or more. The doors are not push pad activated. There is no fixed furniture within the rooms. The clear floor space beneath tables is 68cm. There are chairs with armrests on both sides. The floor coverings are even with no trip hazards.
